Last week was pretty eventful for former Bowie High School standout pitcher Brandon Workman.
Workman, a right-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, allowed a home run to New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez during a spring training game on March 11.
The Yankees topped the Red Sox 10-6.
Rodriguez sent the three-ball, one-strike fastball over the fence for a homer. Workman’s fastball was clocked at 88 miles per hour.
Workman had trouble allowing home runs last season, too.
Workman threw one inning – allowing two hits while striking out one.
So far during spring training, Workman has played in just two games and pitched two innings. His earned-run average stands at 4.50 and opponents are batting .250 against him.
Workman also pitched on March 7 in a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
