Bowie News welcomes new sports editor
The Bowie News staff would like to introduce our readers to Brian Smith, the new Bowie News sports editor.
Smith began his duties this past week following the departure of Jordan Neal who spent eight years covering sports for the newspaper.
Smith is a veteran journalist in the business with 39 years covering news and all levels of sports. He comes to The Bowie News from the Jacksboro Herald-Gazette where since July 2014 he covered sports of three county schools, plus covering a city council and three school boards.
“The Bowie News is extremely fortunate to have Brian joining the staff. Being able to find a 30-year sports veteran is a rare find these days. I am excited to see what I know Brian will bring to the table,” said Publisher Michael Winter.
He was a staff writer for two years with the Weatherford Democrat covering sports and business news, and staff writer at the Daily News in Henderson. Smith also has worked at the Fort Hood Sentinel, Taylor Daily Press and the Orange County Register in California covering news, sports and other topics.
The 59-year-old carries a bachelor of science degree from Central Michigan University where he graduated in 1988. He remembers clearly when his career path began.
“It was a seventh grade career day at my school in suburban Detroit. A journalist came to speak and I was the only one really listening. It got me hook, line and sinker,” laughs Smith.
During college he covered lots of subjects for the newspaper, but during his senior year they were shorthanded in sports, so when the editor asked him to pitch in, he went to his first field hockey game. It was the beginning of a love affair with sports journalism.
“Someone asks what keeps me young and I have said it is the kids, their interest and their involvement keeps me enthusiastic,” he said.
The new sports editor and his wife Heather live in Weatherford where they have made their home for 13 years.
Married 22 years, Heather has been an educational diagnostician for the Arlington Independent School District the past 13 years and also is a former classroom teacher.

The City of Nocona has been nominated as a rural Opportunity Zone by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Mayor Christopher Nunneley said they will begin “pitching” this federal tax angle to potential businesses.”
At a Tuesday afternoon press conference Nunneley, Donna Culpepper, executive director for the Nocona Economic Development Corporation and Michelle Page of the Nocona Chamber of Commerce announced the nomination and offered a brief overview of the federal tax incentives that can become available.

Remember Sept. 11 2001, 25 years later
While history will remember Sept. 11, 2001 among the darkest days in America’s history, it also is a day marked not only by tremendous heroism and bravery by first responders, but also every day Americans from all walks of life who showed the world our country would not be intimidated by terrorism.
There were 2,996 people killed during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York city police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers. Tens of thousands more suffered in the aftermath due to exposure to chemicals and industrial debris.
The Bowie News editor asked some local lawmen, firefighters, a pilot and two retired FBI agents their memories of this tragic day and how their jobs were impacted by the events. We thank them for sharing their reflections.

Looking toward the future, the Bowie City Council Tuesday night voted to add an assistant city manager position promoting Public Works Director Stony Lowrance to the job.
The agenda listed an executive session to discuss evaluation of the city manager. Councilors went to closed session at 6:30 p.m. and 15 minutes later asked City Manager Bert Cunningham and Lowrance to come in. After 15 minutes they left the session and a few minutes later the full council came back to open session.
Councilor Brent Shaw, in making the motion for the assistant city manager, pointed to expanded duties the manager has undertaken. Councilor Boyd Hulstine made the second as the vote received unanimous approval.
