The Bowie High School boys’ track and field team came oh-so close to winning its own Jackrabbit Relays on Monday.
However after a thrilling performance in the 1,600-meter relay, Bowie still finished one point short with 105 points. Holliday accumulated 106 points. Boyd finished third with 89 points.
“When you compete at home, you want to be impressive in your performance, yet the big picture of preparation for the district meet must be foremost.”
Bowie’s near first-place effort was fueled by several athletes – including Barrett Brooks and Dillon Swaim in the middle and long distance runs, Zeke Vaughan in the hurdles and triple jump and sprinter Jesse Vaughn.
Bellevue’s boys placed eighth with 27 points and Nocona was ninth with 23.
On the girls’ side, Bowie finished fourth with 62 points, three behind District 3A-9 rival Jacksboro, and Nocona was eighth with 29 points. Bowie’s efforts were keyed by a golden performance from Madeline Page in the shot put and 16 points in the 800-meter relay.
Nocona head coach Michael Keith was encouraged by the results.
“It was a good night for our athletes and several of them recorded their own personal-bests in events,” Keith said. “It was exciting for me to see them recognize the efforts they’ve put into the workouts.” Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.
Bowie High School’s Zeke Vaughan found himself in a very competitive 110-meter high hurdles on Monday, and he earned first place by 0.03 seconds. See more photos like this on Page 5B of the mid-week Bowie News. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
