Workman Watch

Former Bowie High School and current Boston Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman threw during a national television appearance against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday at Fenway Park.
It’s a night Workman would sooner forget.
Workman allowed six earned runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs, while striking out three and walking three in his second straight loss.
The Cubs eventually defeated the Red Sox 16-9 to complete a three-game sweep and sent Boston to a record of 38-47. It matches the team’s lowest point of the season, nine games under .500.
In the first inning, Justin Ruggiano smacked a two-run home run to left field off Workman. Mike Olt blasted a two-run homer to left center during the fourth inning.
Boston Globe reporter Peter Abraham talked to Workman after the game.
“I started using my breaking ball a lot more in the second and third (innings), and in the fourth it looked like they kind of sat on it,” he said. “I wasn’t able to do anything to stop them. (It was) an ugly night.”
Since coming back from suspension, Workman has allowed 10 runs on 12 hits in 11 innings of work. His overall season earned-run average has ballooned to 4.17.
Overall this season, the 2007 Bowie graduate 1-2, yielding 21 earned runs on 35 hits in 45-1/3 innings.
This was the longest nine-inning game in Major League Baseball this season, at 4 hours, 19 minutes.
Workman faces another Chicago team – the White Sox – in his next start scheduled for July 8 at 6:10 p.m. Central Daylight Time. John Danks will be the opposing pitcher. The Workman Watch is a regular feature of The Bowie News.
