Gold-Burg must endure three on road to start

This marks the first season for the Gold-Burg High School football team under head coach Jay Johnson.
When Johnson was a football player at Azusa Pacific University in California, he had the daunting task of replacing former star running back Christian Okoye. Taking over the Bears is familiar territory for him.
During the non-district schedule, Gold-Burg faces Montague County rival Saint Jo, which plays up in 6-Man Conference 1A Division I, on Sept. 12.
“The kids get excited to play Saint Jo every year,” Johnson said. “Saint Jo is very strong with their football program. They’re always competitive.”
Johnson said it’s important for the Bears to play a team of the Panthers’ stature.
Gold-Burg’s season opener is at Winston School, located in the Collin County community of Murphy. The Aug. 29 game features a special 7 p.m. start time.
The Bears’ schedule isn’t balanced, with three straight road games to begin the season. Gold-Burg plays at Wichita Falls Christian, like Winston School a member of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, on Sept. 5.
“I’m trying to give our kids a chance to compete and be victorious,” Johnson explained as to the rationale of the schedule. “We’re trying to play teams on our same level.”
Finally, on Sept. 19, Gold-Burg plays home against Wise County Christian Homeschool. The following week on Sept. 26, Founders Classical Academy of Lewisville plays in Stoneburg for the Bears’ homecoming. Read more of this story and a complete season schedule in The Bowie News.

Lent has just ended and if you observed it in any way, strictly or somewhere in the middle, you probably felt it. That slow shift in how you cook, what you reach for, and how often you stand in the kitchen wondering what else there is besides peanut butter and pimento cheese. But there is something about going through a season like that that resets your perspective.
You come out the other side appreciating things you did not think twice about before, and sometimes you discover a few new ones along the way.
As a kid, the frozen seafood we ate came in a rectangular box and answered to the name fish sticks.
They were breaded within an inch of their life, cooked until vaguely crisp, and served with enough ketchup to make you forget what you were eating.
They were not great. They were fine, which for a long time was about the best you could say for most frozen fish. And that stuck with me.
