Tommy Tomlinson will be returning to his greatest passion for the 2015-16 season – the softball diamond.
At a recent board meeting, the Chico Independent School District hired Tomlinson as new high school softball coach. He also will be assistant coach for volleyball and seventh-grade girls’ basketball.
Tomlinson started Bowie’s softball program during the early half of the 1990s, and he transformed the Lady Rabbits into a consistent winner.
Former Bowie assistant football coach Lane Wilson, now Chico’s athletic director, said Tomlinson is a “home run hire” for the Lady Dragons.
“I’ve known Tommy a long time,” Wilson said. “He’s a terrific coach, and he’ll bring a lot of experience to us. We are happy to have him.”
Wilson was recently named athletic director, taking over for Stephen Carter.
With two different athletic directors in place, Tomlinson actually had to apply twice to become the Chico coach.
“I think there are tons of possibilities,” Tomlinson said, “and I am excited to work with them.”
Chico has an inexperienced squad, but the Lady Dragons are eager to learn. Chico played Bowie in a summer softball doubleheader scrimmage last week. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
