East football player Chase Hall said the key to success on offense was all about getting into a rhythm.
Hall, the former Bowie High School wide receiver and cornerback, was right.
The East offense finally found its stride in the second half, and needed overtime to defeat West in the 79th Annual Maskat Shrine Oil Bowl game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
“I think we were more comfortable (in the second half),” said ex-Bowie offensive lineman Josh Monkres. “To get a win, you do whatever it takes.”
Monkres, who said playing in the oldest-running all-star game was a challenge, helped pave the way for the East to gain 263 yards.
Hall actually made his biggest mark on defense, helping provide strong pass coverage during the overtime session as the West failed to score.
Muenster’s Dalton Bartel picked off Taylor Massey on West’s third play in overtime, giving the East a crack at scoring from the 25-yard line.
“Dalton came up big, and he gave us a chance to win,” Hall said. “This was a fun game, with fun in capital letters. It was a great, competitive game.”
