Aussie national jailed for drugs

A quartet of Australian nationals traveling across the United States were stopped in Bowie last Friday with one arrested for possession of cocaine.
The arrest occurred on June 30 during a drug interdiction detail on U.S. Highway 287 between Farm-to-Market Road 1125 and State Highway 59.
Detective Bob Blackburn said the “drug checkpoint ahead” sign had been deployed in this area when he saw a red vehicle pass the sign and pull onto the shoulder of the roadway on the southbound side of U.S. 287 about .02 of a mile south of the Texas 59 overpass. The incident lead to the discover of two to three grams of cocaine in the vehicle and the driver being arrested.

Monday morning fire destroys home on Hwy. 101

This frame house at 3013 State Highway 101 was destroyed by fire around 7 a.m. on Jan. 12. Bowie Rural Fire Chief Randall Preuninger said the house was under renovation and the fire appears to have started in the laundry room going into the attic. The home, owned by Brady Fielder, was occupied by several residents and while they were able to retrieve some items, the home was a total loss. Bowie Rural, Bowie City, Sunset, Forestburg and Alvord Fire responded, along with the sheriff’s office and emergency management. (Courtesy photo)

Bowie City Council to open 2026

Members of the Bowie City Council will meet for their first session of 2026 at 6 p.m. on Jan. 13.
Numerous items of new business fill the agenda including a resolution offered by the Bowie Economic Development Corporation to administer and fund an equipment purchase and installation project supporting a private capital investment exceeding $170,000 at 203 N. Mason. This is the location of Milano’s Pizza which has recently undergone a complete remodel.
The council will award a bid to Legend Bank as the city depository and a re-appointment will be made the Bowie Library Board. A memo of understanding with the Texas Division of Emergency Management and Texas Emergency Management Assistance Teams participating jurisdiction will be examined.
The final item is an ordinance abandoning a portion of the alley right-of-way connected with the sewer line replacement project in the Wilbarger Street area. The second reading of an ordinance also connected to this site also is listed.
City Manager Bert Cunningham will report on the downtown sidewalk project, the Rock and Pillar Street project and the substation work.
