Lady Rabbits slip past Slidell, 17-15

Bowie held off a stiff challenge from Slidell in Nocona Summer League action June 22, the Lady Rabbit basketball team posting a 17-15 win over the Lady ‘Hounds.

Slidell took a pair of early leads only to be met by a basket and 3-pointer by junior Laney Segura for a 5-4 Bowie lead. Sophomore newcomer Sawyer Martin’s free throws and a Kynlee Baker basket extended the lead to 9-4 midway through the 16-minute running clock first half.

Each team traded baskets to close the half, Bowie’s basket from Kylee Waldrep, as the Lady Rabbits took advantage of cold shooting from the Lady ‘Hounds to lead 11-6 at the break.

Slidell got within one early in the second half, using a size advantage inside for a couple of layins to get within 11-10 with about 12 minutes left. Bowie used another small run to take control again.

RJ Oliver takes over as Nocona BB coach

RJ Oliver is ready to take over “his” team.

The new Nocona Head Baseball coach, who has been at the school for six years as an assistant coach, is ready to tke tdhe incoming seniors to the next level.”

When I first started here, we weren’t every good but we built a program that has gotten better over the years,” Oliver said. “I’ve been offered other jobs since I’ve been here but the senior and I have worked together since 6th grade and I think we have the chance to breally good.”

Nocona went into the area round this year before being knocked out. Oliver said it has been exciting getting the head coach position. Oliver is bursting at the seams to get started next Spring.

Youth take part in Jim Bowie Days Rodeo

Results for the 2026 Jim Bowie Days Youth Rodeo are as follows:

Barrel Racing

First place in the ages 7-10 division was Korleigh Carver with a time of 17.724 followed by Lilly Pitts in 18.547 for 2nd place. In 3rd place was Willa Crawford in 20.696 with Jackson Fletcher in 4th in 21.494. Brady Hoffman was 5th in 23.176.

Annabelle Spooner won the 11-14 division with a time of 17.751 followed by Hadley Donegan in 2nd with a time of 17.999. In 3rd spot was Layna Taylor in 19.113 with Brinley Steinke in 4th with a time of 19.647. Kambell Hansard was 5th in 19.873.

In the ages 15-19 division Paislee Fugate won with a time of 16.897 followed by Marli Donegan in 17.823. In 3rd spot was Bryellen Vaillalpando in 17.98 with Julia Mott in 18.249 finishing 4th and Adyson Conner 5th in 18.671.
