Bill the Bull brings a unique story to children

On a rare sunny day in mid-May, Bill the Bull attended school. But Bill wasn’t there to learn. Instead he attended Bowie Elementary School to teach a valuable lesson about bullying.

The gentle giant, a six-year-old Charlais-cross bull, is the star of a children’s book local teacher Cindy Hedeman wrote and illustrated, entitled “Bill is No Bully.”

The book, released earlier this spring, tells the story of Bill’s life, which began on a ranch in Shepherd, near Houston. Born of championship bucking stock, Bill was expected to become a famous rodeo bull. Owner Alexis Bradford, then a nine-year-old girl, brought the young calf home in an ice storm, bottle-fed him and gave him special attention.

Bowie, Nocona libraries wrap up summer reading this week

Local libraries wrap up their children’s summer reading programs this week.
The Bowie Public Library brings the popular Creature Teacher with all their spectacular animals for the final event on July 23 at the Bowie Community Center.
The program begins at 10 am. The children also will receive their prize books for their summer logs.
The Nocona Public Library ends its program at 10 a.m. on July 24 at the H.J. Justin Building at 100 Clay Street. The program will be “Our Own Action Heroes -” Nocona fire, police and EMTs.
