Bowie High School will serve as the site for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association regional meet for the next two years.
In addition, Bowie Junior High School assistant principal and strength-and-conditioning coach Monte Sewell has been named regional chairman for 2016 and 2017.
The decision was announced at the Bowie Athletic Booster Club meeting on Monday evening.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to be selected by other coaches,” Sewell said. “It’s a compliment to the program, and that we know what we are doing.”
For the past seven years, Bowie has had some form of representation at the state girls’ powerlifting meet – with the likes of recent athletes Hannah Shaw, Shelbi Rhoda, Kylie Robinson, Kelsey Grottie and Taylor Richey.
Sewell said the exact dates for the regional meets for the next two years have yet to be determined, but it will fall most likely during the final weekend of February.
“We’re probably going to see somewhere between 120-140 competitors,” Sewell said. “There’s going to be at least 10 girls in each weight class.” Read more in the weekend Bowie News.
