HIGH SCHOOLS: Summer lifting is necessity

Former Bowie High School standout athletes Tim and Brad Bendure are helping strength-and-conditioning coordinator Monte Sewell with the summer program.
Bendure put junior high school students through their paces on a recent Thursday morning through free weights, quick runs and more.
“We are working the entire body,” Sewell said. “We have a certain routine each day.”
Bowie athletes are working on speed drills, functional and resistance training and running.
“Students ran in the ditch, which is good for their legs and respiratory system,” Sewell said.
Plyometric training is another facet of the program. Muscles exert the maximum force possible in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing both speed and power, through explosive jumps.
Bowie football players have been lifting weights Monday through Thursday from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Then junior high school students work out from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m., and additional high school students from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Sewell said it’s an obstacle keeping athletes in shape during the summer months, and this program helps overcome that.
Bowie has plenty of multi-sport athletes, which makes it vital they stay fit. Many Jackrabbit football players compete on both offense and defense.
“This program, it’s a foundation for every sport,” Sewell said. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.
