The Bowie High School girls’ basketball team and Bellevue High School boys’ basketball teams are among those with lofty goals for the 2014-15 season.
One of those goals is a berth in the University Interscholastic League state tournament.
Well, “on to state” now has a different meaning as the UIL has announced the state girls’ and boys’ basketball tournaments are moving from Austin to San Antonio effective this season. The UIL made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.
The Alamodome has been chosen as the host site. It is a domed 65,000-seat, multi-purpose facility on the southeastern fringe of downtown San Antonio that can also be used for large conventions.
The state girls’ basketball tournament is slated for March 5-7, 2015, and the boys one week later March 12-14, 2015.
The move was a topic of discussing during the girls’ basketball coaching school last weekend, Bowie Head Basketball Coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said.
“I really don’t think it’s going to be a good venue for girls’ basketball,” Davis-Pastusek said. “It will be better for boys’ basketball.”
Davis-Pastusek is concerned with how the Alamodome will be curtained off, especially noting the grandiose nature of the building.
