Bowie girls show staying power at TBC

Well, if this weekend’s performance in the first-ever Texas Basketball Championships Tournament is any indication, the Bowie High School girls’ basketball team will contend for a Conference 3A state title this year.
The Lady Rabbits gave Brock all they could handle Sunday in the championship game before falling 40-36.
Brock just happened to be a state championship finalist this year, and the school had been attempting to win its sixth consecutive title.
“I think we did great,” Bowie Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said. “We were up four at halftime and it was a one-possession game with 15 seconds left. We played good basketball.”
Bowie went 4-1 at the tournament, which included a comfortable 48-32 victory over nearby Muenster in the semifinals.
“The girls were mad,” Davis-Pastusek said. “The girls wanted to win, but I think we ran out of gas.”
Davis-Pastusek said the Lady Rabbits had a potential go-ahead 3-pointer rim out, and were forced to foul Brock, who canned free throws to seal the victory.
This weekend, Bowie girls’ basketball will wrap up its summer activities with the Abilene Christian University Tournament. The Lady Rabbits will take on Abilene Wylie, Haskell and Wittharral.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
