HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING: For openers, Bowie succeeds

The Bowie High School powerlifting team embarked on their maiden voyage putting on an invitational meet.
Let’s consider this a success.
The girls’ squad garnered the Bowie Invitational with 31 points, four better than a talented crew from Springtown.
The boys finished third with 28 points, seven behind meet winner Gainesville and four in back of Wichita Falls City View. Bowie placed very high despite 275-pounder Saul Landaverde not present.
“Seeing all the first-year lifters earn medals made me happy,” Bowie strength-and-conditioning coach Monte Sewell said. “They performed like veterans. All of our girls earned medals, except for one.”
Bowie’s girls received contributions from newcomers such as Carrington Davis, Montana Holbach, Madison Metzler and Sami Deford.
“All the new girls stepped up, and returner Sofie Butler got third, which was good to see,” said Bowie head powerlifting coach Quentin Berend.
At 123 pounds, Kylie Robinson set a personal-best record with a 290-pound dead lift, as part of a winning three-discipline total of 650. The other lifts used as part of the score are the squat and bench press.
Carcyn Robertson, at 132 pounds, also won her weight division with a total of 640 pounds, including a 255-pound squat. Davis was second for Bowie at 165 pounds (640). Read more in The Bowie News.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
