The St. Louis Cardinals tagged former Bowie High School standout pitcher Brandon Workman for three runs in the opening inning Thursday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
It spelled the beginning of the end as St. Louis added another run in the fifth inning while Workman was on the bump – as the Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-2.
In his last two starts, Workman has recorded a whopping 70 pitches, and allowed five runs. In 10 starts overall, Workman has surrendered 12 runs in the first inning.
“I just didn’t come out sharp and that got me,” Workman told the Associated Press after the game. “I put our team behind the 8-ball against a good pitcher. Maybe I need to take a different approach.”
Workman was called up and moved into the rotation when Jon Lester was traded to the American League West-leading Oakland Athletics.
Workman has dropped his past five decisions and had a 6.04 earned-run average during such time.
It certainly didn’t help matters St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright was the opposing pitcher. Wainwright earned his 14th victory.
In 5-1/3 innings, Workman gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits while five strikeouts and two walks. Kolten Wong smacked a home run off Workman.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Workman is a 2007 graduate of Bowie High School and a member of the school’s Hall of Honor.
