Bowie High School senior Cristian Martinez ended his scholastic powerlifting career with flourish.
Martinez earned a silver medal putting up 1,105 pounds, including a 440-pound squat, at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 3 state meet on Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
“He lifted well,” said Bowie powerlifting coach Quentin Berend. “He just missed 460 in the squat. He hit all three of his bench presses, and a 410-pound dead lift sealed it for him.”
Martinez, at 132 pounds, battled through back troubles to earn the medal – much to the delight of his family. His older sister Sam Martinez came down from Iowa to watch him compete.
Cristian Martinez’s second-place showing helped give Bowie five points and a 14th place finish at the event. He was Bowie’s first state medalist since P.J. Caparelli several years ago.
Raymon Aranda from Seagraves earned gold in the 132-pound division, hoisting 1,245 pounds. Aranda had a 475-pound squat and a massive 485-pound dead lift.
Saul Landaverde recorded a seventh-place finish in the 275-pound division. He put together lifts of 700 pounds (squat), 360 in the bench and 525 in the dead lift. Read more, and see complete state results, in the April 6 Bowie News.
