STORM CENTER: History is made on Fourth of July

Well, that time of year is upon – this marks Independence Day weekend.
There will be plenty of festivities across the region with fireworks celebrations at Lake Nocona today, Bellevue on Sunday and then Saint Jo this Monday.
Boaters will line up and show off their watercraft during a parade at Lake Nocona, which is just part of the fun this weekend.
In Saint Jo, sporting enthusiasts will have plenty of activities to choose from – ranging from the Old Jo Firecracker five-kilometer run to horseshoe pitching and sand volleyball to 3-on-3 basketball.
Some sports fans will instead stay inside – after all, the Fourth of July in Texas is typically a hot one – and temperatures are expected to hit triple digits.
That means lounging in front of the television, or perhaps your device, and watching sporting events.
Did you know there have been three no-hitters in Major League Baseball history on July 4?
But two of them happened well before our time.
Case in point, before the New York Giants eventually landed in San Francisco, George “Hooks” Wiltse pitched a rare 10-inning no-no in 1908 to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 1-0. Read more in the July 2 Bowie News.

Saint Jo will be the site of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Boggess Park on Monday during the community’s annual Fourth of July celebration. (News file photo by Eric Viccaro)

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
