STORM CENTER: Creedyn keeps on fighting

All of North Texas has rallied around now 11-month old Creedyn McClelland.
And another show of support will take place on Aug. 13 with the “Crush It for Creedyn” softball tournament at the Haggar Sports Complex off Mill Street in Bowie.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m., and all proceeds will go to support Creedyn as he battles a form of leukemia at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth. He had been in remission, but returned to the hospital on June 20.
Creedyn was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), which is a type of cancer of both the blood and bone marrow according to the website: mayoclinic.org.
The word acute comes from the fact the disease spreads rapidly, like a California forest fire. Immature blood cells are created, and it affects all white blood cells.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALL is the most common type of cancer in children, and treatments result in a “good chance for a cure.”
Let’s talk softball for a minute, and how the tournament came together.
“I work with Creedyn’s grandmother,” said Brooke Correll, a former all-district softball player at Wichita Falls Old High, “at Beyond Faith Homecare. I wanted to do something for the family.”
Correll works as a registered nurse at the facility.
Michelle Lopez, Creedyn’s grandmother, is an administrative assistant.
“It’s been amazing to see people come together (for Creedyn),” Lopez said. “It’s been great. I will be helping with the tournament wherever needed.”
So you’ll likely see Lopez helping to staff the concession stand and everything else.
Michelle Lopez reported her husband, Lee, will play on one of the nine teams that has already registered to participate. Read more in the Aug. 6 Bowie News.
