HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Nocona bounces Chico

Two years ago, the Nocona High School offense struggled to score points – but that’s certainly not the case during this 2016 season.
Brent Lewis, who was named offensive coordinator in the offseason, has been giving opposing defenses fits with the use of a bunch formation.
Several Nocona wide receivers are grouped together on one side of the field, while Riley McCasland is out on an island on his side.
“It has been giving defenses problems,” said coach Brad Keck. “Other teams don’t quite know how to attack it.”
It has been tough for opponents to figure out what play Nocona is going to run with this formation, or which skill position player’s number will be called on a play.
To that end, Nocona rolled up more than 400 yards in offense thanks to Lewis’ play-calling abilities as the Indians topped Chico 39-0 at Jack Crain Stadium on Friday.
On the defensive side of the ball, coordinator Jonathan Shaw has to be beaming from ear to ear knowing Nocona has shut out two straight opponents. The players understand what Shaw wants now that he’s in his third season with the Indians.
Nocona’s defense kept Chico in check, and the Dragons amassed only 80 yards. Tanner Cable continues to impress with 19 tackles. Read more in the Sept. 21 Bowie News.

Nocona’s Parker Marshall (4) runs after making a catch during the first quarter of Friday’s game versus Chico at Jack Crain Stadium. The Indians blanked the Dragons 39-0.
