Former Bowie High School standout pitcher Brandon Workman didn’t pitch out of the bullpen at all during last weekend’s series for the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees.
That means Workman’s last performance of the season took place on Sept. 18 at Pittsburgh against the Pirates – in which he earned a loss. The Red Sox wrapped up play this past Sunday.
Workman pitched well enough to win in that game, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out six and walking three. He allowed a home run as Pittsburgh defeated Boston 3-2 at PNC Park.
Workman finished a disappointing 2014 campaign with a record of 1-10, which includes a 5.17 earned-run average.
He worked 87 innings, giving up 57 runs (50 earned) on 88 hits, including 11 home runs. Opponents finished the season batting .263 against Workman.
The Bowie Hall of Honor inductee struck out 70 and walked 36.
Workman fared much better with the Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) PawSox, going 7-1 with a 4.11 ERA. In 11 game starts and 61-1/3 innings pitched, he allowed 28 earned runs on 61 hits to go with 55 strikeouts and 17 walks. He surrendered 10 minor league homers, too.
It’s unclear what role Workman will have with the Red Sox for the 2015 season, and a return to the bullpen could be in the offing.
