Graham defeated Abilene Wylie for the 7-on-7 Division II state title on Friday afternoon at Veterans Park & Athletic Complex in College Station.
The Steers’ Jahlian Tate deflected an Abilene Wylie pass in the closing moments, and Graham knocked off Abilene Wylie 27-20.
This marked the third time in the past five years Graham has won the summer state title.
Graham rolled through the competition, opening with a 53-31 victory over El Campo, followed by wins over Alpine, Kaufman and Navasota – winning the semifinal game 41-27.
The Steers also rolled through Pool J play, going 3-0. Brock was 1-2, with the lone win over Sweeny.
The Graham-Abilene Wylie game was thrilling as the storied programs matched each other with scoring drives or defensive stands.
Pool winners were as follows: Fairfield (Pool A), Texarkana Pleasant Grove (B), Somerset (C), Boerne (D), Brazosport (E), San Augustine (F), China Spring (G), Argyle (H), Bay City (I), Cameron (K), Kaufman (L), Cuero (M), Brownwood (N), Andrews (O) and Navasota (P).
Lake Travis defeated Waxahachie 34-33 as Waxahachie missed a potential game-winning two-point conversion in the Division I title game.
Former Bowie ISD coach Ryan Rogers will be on Lake Travis’ football staff this fall. Read more in the July 5 Bowie News.

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
