After further exploration of the legalities of a recall petition for the Bowie City Council, organizers have been informed the previous number of 381 is the amount needed for a “referendum” election, while a recall election requires 628 signatures of registered voters in the city.
City Secretary Sandy Page said previously petition organizer Tami Buckmaster had called to ask about the number needed for a petition referendum.
Per the city charter, the amount is equal to 20 percent of the number who voted in the last general election. Page told her 381, as did the county voter registrar, according to Buckmaster.
Page said Thursday the city charter states a recall petition requires 20 percent of the registered voters in the city, which amounts to 628. She also confirmed those figures with Ginger Wall, county elections administrator.
