Bowie, Nocona powerlifting teams compete well at Boyd
Both Bowie and Nocona girls powerlifting teams competed at Boyd on Thursday in the final regional qualifier meet.
The Lady Rabbits finished second overall while the Lady Indians finished sixth as teams.
Bowie had eight girls finish among the top five in their weight classes at the meet and score points.
Kerstin Wolfe and Katie Boyles won the 181 and 198 pound weight classes. Wolfe’s 890 total pounds lifted were the highest at the meet regardless of weight class. Boyles lifted 825 total pounds.
Girls who placed in the top five for Bowie included Traycee Stewart (second), Meridythe Metzler (second), Ashley Aguirre (second), Jordan Vaught (second), Leah Boyd (second) and Jenna Rogers (third).
All of the lifters listed above as well as Laisha Johnson and Kinley Russell also have qualified for the regional meet.
For Nocona, Natalie Pirkey and Paige James won their weight classes. Pirkey’s 580 total was enough to win the 123 pound class. James’ 785 total won the 220 pound weight class. Both also qualified for regionals.
Only the top two lifters at the regional meet in each weight class will qualify for state.
The tentative date for the regional meet is March 5 at Chico.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
