During the past few weeks, area high school and junior high school basketball programs have descended on Bowie for league play.
“It’s a great opportunity for the kids,” said Doug Boxell, who is entering his second year as the head boys’ basketball coach at Bowie.
Boxell said players are learning team chemistry and how to play to individual strengths. The Jackrabbit boys are coming off a 22-10 season, district co-champions with Nocona.
Under University Interscholastic League rules, Boxell isn’t allowed to coach the boys.
Rather that responsibility falls to Elton Johnson, the father of current Jackrabbit point guard Trey Johnson.
As for the Bowie girls, head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said summer league gives players time to develop decision-making skills.
“I get to see which kids are going to step up as leaders and see how they get out there make adjustments,” she said.
Davis-Pastusek said the Jackrabbit girls share opinions and coach themselves.
