A quick opener

The Bowie High School volleyball team played well in all phases during Tuesday’s match against Archer City as the Lady Rabbits prevailed in three games by scores of 25-8, 25-12, 27-25.
Archer City came into the game ranked ninth in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Conference 2A poll, and Bowie took it right at them from the start.
“We took them out of their offense with our serve and what we were doing on the outside,” Bowie head coach Jeanie Stark said.
Bowie stands at 1-0 heading into Tuesday’s match at Petrolia, who is competing in today’s Bryson Tournament.
In the third set, Archer City libero Madison Lucido gave her team a fighting chance by digging up most everything. Still, the Lady Rabbits rallied and eventually won the match in three.
“I knew if we could get it back to two points, we had a chance,” Stark said, “and that’s the way it played out. We started making fewer mistakes. I am proud of them, and how they came back.”
Stark quickly used two timeouts in the third set to settle down the Lady Rabbits, who began relying more on tipping and free balls rather than doing what was successful in the first and second set – well-placed, hard-nosed kills.

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
