STORM CENTER: Suicide an issue we must tackle
This past Monday, the world was saddened by a man who gave us so much laughter – comedian Robin Williams.
This marks the second time since I’ve been sports editor of The Bowie News, I have written a column in which suicide was a prevalent topic – earlier this summer I wrote a piece on pro wrestling and the Von Erich family of Corinth in which three brothers took their own lives.
After Williams’ death, I was so compelled to post on our Facebook page about ways of coping with depression.
The Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas is available with trained staff. Volunteers are there to listen to you as a friend on the other end on its help line.
The number is 1-214-828-1000.
If you are feeling depressed or just want someone to talk to, you could also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Services are free and absolutely confidential. Please remember, people are there for you, 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
The Facebook post received 42 likes, including one from a friend of mine in Arkansas, as well as 24 shares. More than 2,000 people were reached by the post.
My cousin Nick Feitz committed suicide during the 1980s; I was so distraught that I was uncomfortable about going to the funeral in Georgetown, Mass. This tragedy sticks with me to this day. Read more of this column in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
