SPORTS BRIEFS: One camp left at River Bend
One River Bend Rangers camp remains before the start of school.
The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 18-22 at the River Bend Nature Center in Wichita Falls at 2200 Third Street.
The camp is for children ages 4-12 years old.
The cost is $70 for River Bend Nature Center members, and $80 for nonmembers.

Meet the Panthers set for Aug. 28
There will be a Meet the Panther event in Saint Jo after 6 p.m. on Aug. 28 at Harley Sewell Field in Saint Jo.
Watermelon will be served at this social gathering.
High school and junior high school athletes will be recognized that night.
The Meet the Panther event will occur right after Meet the Teacher.
NCTC v-ball slate released
The North Central Texas College volleyball program will open the season on Aug. 22 at the Tyler Tournament.
The home opener will follow at 6 p.m. on Aug. 27 as NCTC plays Northlake College. Overall, the Lions will play 13 home matches this year.
NCTC, Clarendon, Brookhaven, Paris, Navarro, Seminole, Wharton and Trinity Valley will all compete in the North Central Invitational on Sept. 5-6.
The Lions open league play on Sept. 16 against rival Temple College.
The National Junior College Athletic Association Region V tournament will take place Nov. 7-8 with the national tournament to follow in Casper, Wyo., from Nov. 20-22.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
