FISHING: Bowie takes fifth at Texoma

Published

on

The Bowie High School bass fishing team continued a successful first campaign, placing fifth at the Lake Texoma Meet on Saturday.
The meet took place at Cedar Mills Marina in Gordonville, north of Whitesboro.
Burleson’s Centennial High School was the meet winner.
Hadley Morgan and Lane Hopson fared the best among the Bowie two-person teams. The pair weighed 2.78 pounds of fish.
Mitch Sanders fished alone, and caught 2.63 pounds.
Spenser Meekins and Jared Stone teamed up to catch 2.32 pounds of fish.
Those three teams finished in the top-25. There were 67 two-man teams overall.
The teams of Jake Rhyne and Kollin Gillaspia and Stetson Gaines and Brandon McChesney didn’t catch any fish large enough to weigh.
“It was an absolutely miserable day to fish with the heat,” Trent Gillaspia, Bowie fishing team coordinator, said. “There were no clouds. More than half the teams didn’t have any fish to weigh.”
With no cloud cover, fish are less likely to bite.
“With the conditions, I am pleased with the way we fished.”
There was a boat captain’s side pot, and Rusty Edwards won it. Edwards caught a fish weighing 7.86 pounds. He served as the boat captain for Mitch Sanders.
Bowie’s next meet will take place in March at Lake Lewisville.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages

Published

Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.

Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.

“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”

Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.

Two major portions of Nocona’s 2023 bond issue are very close to being completed.

Waters said a punch list meeting with the construction manager was scheduled for earlier this week with final touchups expected shortly afterwards. Fans should be able to enjoy the facility for the volleyball team’s season opener Aug. 11.

Fans will enjoy the new gym from entering the facility which has glass walls, enabling fans to watch the game from the foyer. Once inside the gym itself, there is stadium, chair back seating on the home side allowing for a much more comfortable experience.
