The Bowie High School football team suffered yet another setback Friday night as Boyd rallied to defeat the Jackrabbits 14-13 in the District 4-3A-I opener for both schools at Boyd ISD Stadium.

The game included a weather delay that lasted about two hours, 30 minutes.

Officials spotted lightning at 9:30 p.m. when Bowie had what proved to be a tenuous 13-7 lead at the 1:21 mark of the third quarter.

Teams returned to the field at midnight, and the game concluded at 12:42 a.m.

Boyd tackled Bowie behind the line of scrimmage on the final play.

Everything seemed to be going the Jackrabbits way. The team built a 13-0 lead with a couple of exhausting first-half drives.

Kevin Stallcup and Lawson Mickler punched in short runs for touchdowns in the opening half. Bowie’s defense held Boyd in check for nearly three quarters, aided by several interceptions.

Fortunes changed late in the third quarter after a faulty Bowie punt that traveled just two yards, giving Boyd field position at the Jackrabbit 19.

Qualynn Wells cashed in four plays later on an 11-yard TD run.

After the game resumed, Jackson Basting intercepted a Lawson Mickler pass to end one Bowie drive. Mickler later was stopped short on a key fourth-down conversion midway through the fourth quarter.

Aided by a Bowie face mask infraction, Boyd then set for course on its next possession – and ultimately Wells scored his second TD of the contest from 35 yards out with 1:04 left in the fourth.

Bowie dropped to 1-5, 0-1 in 4-3A-I heading into next Friday’s showdown with tough Brock. Boyd improved to 2-4, 1-0. Read the mid-week Bowie News for more coverage.

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
