STORM CENTER: It was ‘Friday Night Lightning’
Let the sports editor say – for the record – last Friday’s high school football game between Bowie and Boyd was one of the more interesting I’ve been associated with.
I’ve covered high school football games since I was in college, and the weather for the District 4-3A-I opener was some of the most intense ever.
Rain fell in buckets. Lightning was so vivid and bright there was a question whether it caused Boyd Independent School District Stadium to go dark for roughly 30 minutes.
The thunder sounded like what happens when I dive into a bowl of Cracklin’ Oat Bran cereal.
Winds picked up, and changed direction so many times I thought the weather was channeling its inner Barry Sanders.
Yes, it was that kind of night.
At 9:30 p.m., just after Boyd had closed the gap on Bowie to 13-7 with a Qualynn Wells touchdown and Spencer Pellegrini extra-point kick, the officiating crew stopped the game.
Lightning flashed northwest of the stadium. The storm was coming in. The cold front became the only true ground gainer – for about 2 hours, 30 minutes. Read more from this column in the weekend Bowie News.
Editor’s Note: The Storm Center column is the expressed written views of sports editor Eric Viccaro and not The Bowie News.
For two hours, 30 minutes, Boyd Independent School District Stadium was vacant during a weather delay on Oct. 10 as Bowie and Boyd tried to play a district football game. See how wet the parking lot is. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
