THIS WEEK: Bucking Horse Futurity Oct. 18
There will be a Bucking Horse Futurity this Oct. 18 at Chisholm Trail Rodeo Arena in Nocona.
The slate will start at 5 p.m.
The admission fee is $5. Children six years of age and younger are admitted free.
Spectators will witness up-and-coming stars from the bucking horse world compete for cash, prizes and bragging rights.
The Nocona VFW Post Riding Club is the sponsor for the event, which will be sanctioned by the United Bucking Horse Association.
These events draw the interest of stock contractors, looking to bring in horses from faraway locations – such as Canada – and local talent from here. The horses are yearlings through three years old.
The event will include a pony bareback/ranch bronc competition for rides ages 13 years old and under. There will also be a 6-and-under stick bronc contest.
There will be the crowning of a king, ages 13-18 years old, and prince from age eight to 12.
Royalty will be judged on riding a specific horsemanship pattern, cleanliness, ability to handle a horse, knowledge and personality. There will also be an award for the boy who sells the most tickets.
The event will benefit the Montague County Wounded Veterans Program.
For information, call Marie Molsbee at 940-867-0165 or e-mail: noconavfwpost8558ridingclub@gmail.com.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
