Nocona High School’s Miriam Diaz smashed the 12-minute threshold, while Bowie’s Kamryn Cantwell showed she’s an elite runner in Conference 3A.
Both Diaz and Cantwell will represent Montague County at the University Interscholastic League State Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Old Settlers’ Park in Round Rock.
Diaz clocked in with a time of 11 minutes, 59.65 seconds, which was good enough for third overall, at the Conference 3A, Region 2 meet at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie on Saturday.
Cantwell qualified for state with a time of 12:22 flat over the two-mile course, taking 13th with a pace time of 6:11 flat.
“Kamryn ran an excellent race,” Bowie head coach Colby Davis-Pastusek said, “and it was her fastest time of the season. We look forward to another week getting better, and she hopes to run a personal best in Round Rock.”
Old Settlers Park is known for one giant climb during the run, and the course provides a top challenge even for the most seasoned of runners.
Diaz followed up a third-place finish at the District 3A-9 race at Kiwanis Park in Wichita Falls on Oct. 20 with her effort here.
“Miriam competed very well this weekend,” Nocona head coach Brad McGann said. “She has worked unbelievably hard this season, constantly improving her times at each meet.”
Diaz’ previous best time was 12:15 at that district event. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
