FOOTBALL: Saint Jo gridders receive honors

The Saint Jo High School football team received honors earlier this week as the District 9-IA-Division I all-district teams were made public.
The Panthers are coming off a 5-5 season, under longtime head coach Chad Tallon.
Newcastle and Tioga staffs tied for Coach of the Year accolades.
Newcastle senior Ryan Hardin was named the offensive most valuable player and Trinity Bohanon, also of Newcastle, the defensive MVP. Newcastle sophomore Mikey Walker was named Newcomer of the Year.
Newcastle won the district and Tioga also qualified for the playoffs. Saint Jo placed third, and Bryson was last in this four-team district.
The first-team offense featured Saint Jo’s Wyatt West at wide receiver. Blake Pledger was named top spread center.
Garrett Parker of Saint Jo was selected as first-team spreadback and Laramie Brawner was a first-team specialist.
Daimeon Lawler was chosen as a second-team tight end. Ethan Wagner was second-team tight center. Anthony Gutierrez was a second-team running back, Baltazar Lozano second-team fullback and Lawler second-team kicker.
On defense, Lawler was first-team defensive lineman. Brawner was a first-team linebacker selection. Lozano was chosen as a defensive utility player.
As for the second-team defense, Saint Jo’s Colton Thomas was picked as a defensive lineman, Garrett Parker a second-team linebacker and West a second-team safety.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
