STORM CENTER COLUMN: Big 12 needs to be legitimate
Let’s talk about football.
Sure, I could gloat about the fact the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys 33-10 at AT&T Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
But, I don’t gloat – especially knowing the Eagles and Cowboys will play each other again in early December in Philadelphia.
The NFC East is far from settled, in my opinion.
But, let’s get to the heart of the matter – the first-year college football playoff system.
The sports editor has heard from local fans they think both Texas Christian and Baylor are getting slighted from playoff committee.
Sorry, but I don’t buy it.
Weigh the facts.
Baylor mounted an incredible comeback to defeat Texas Christian on a sweltering mid-October afternoon at McLane Stadium in Waco. The Bears scored 24 fourth-quarter points to beat the Horned Frogs 61-58.
In turn, and part of the vicious circle of college football, West Virginia defeated Baylor 41-27 one week later up in Morgantown, W.Va. The Mountaineers scored the game’s final 14 points to prevail.
And finally, in the Big 12 (which is in reality a 10-team league); there is no conference championship game as there was when there were actually 12 schools.
So, I’m sorry, TCU head coach Gary Patterson and Baylor coach Art Briles, but I don’t buy the line every school plays each other so that determines “One True Champion.”
That’s the rhetorical narrative the Big 12 has tried to sell all of its supporters since going to a 10-team league. The Big 12 has been trying to tread water for years. Read more from this column in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages
Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.
Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.
“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”
Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.

New Nocona gym nearing completion
Two major portions of Nocona’s 2023 bond issue are very close to being completed.
The new high school gym should be complete in time for the volleyball team to begin practice there Aug. 1, according to Superintendent Dr. David Waters. Ground on the 22,000 square foot facility was broken on Oct. 18, 2024.
Waters said a punch list meeting with the construction manager was scheduled for earlier this week with final touchups expected shortly afterwards. Fans should be able to enjoy the facility for the volleyball team’s season opener Aug. 11.
Fans will enjoy the new gym from entering the facility which has glass walls, enabling fans to watch the game from the foyer. Once inside the gym itself, there is stadium, chair back seating on the home side allowing for a much more comfortable experience.
