STORM CENTER COLUMN: Boxell marks off milestone win

Published

on

Bowie High School second-year head boys’ basketball coach Doug Boxell experienced a milestone on Thursday at the Decatur Tournament.
Boxell earned his 700th win as the Jackrabbits defeated Azle 54-35.
It has been a remarkable journey for Boxell, and it all started with his first career win while coaching Santo back in 1985.
“I’ve been in long enough to coach a lot of good kids,” Boxell said. “Good things have happened, and I’m thankful.”
Longevity and success have gone hand-in-hand for Boxell.
Under Boxell’s tutelage, the Jackrabbits are 8-2 as they continued play at the Decatur Tournament on Friday.
Boxell said he didn’t want to single out any one of his former players, citing that he’s enjoyed coaching all of them.
This has been quite the week for Boxell, who coached against his son, Zach, for the second time in as many years this past Tuesday as the Jackrabbits played Conference 3A No. 1 Brock.
Basketball is a family sport for the Boxells.
Layne Boxell, another one of Doug’s sons, is the head boys’ basketball coach at Tatum. Lance Boxell is the head girls’ basketball coach at Lovejoy in Lucas.
Isaiah Boxell is currently serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Eastern Nazarene College, which is located in Quincy, Mass.
Boxell’s wife, Jeananne, can be seen on the sidelines of every single Bowie game working with the statistics program on an Apple-based device. Read the remainder of this column in the weekend Bowie News.

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages

Published

Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.

Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.

“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”

Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.
