Ranked teams recorded victories during Friday’s District 1A-21 games at Slidell as the Bellevue boys did enough for a 66-60 victory and Slidell’s girls rolled to a 65-36 win.
“We did just enough to come out on top,” Bellevue head boys’ basketball coach Colby Broussard admitted.
“I thought we could have done a better job defensively,” Broussard continued. “They really spread us out and drove to the basket. Their goal was to get to the free-throw line to try and win the game, and that’s what they did.”
Still, the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) 17th-ranked Bellevue boys prevailed behind a 20-point night from point guard Jakob Watkins.
The Slidell girls registered 18 free-throw attempts en route to the win over Bellevue.
“Slidell is very good about drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line, but then on top of that, they make their free throws when they get there,” Bellevue head girls’ basketball coach Bryan Goehring said.
Slidell closed Bellevue’s lead to 49-43 heading into the fourth quarter, heightening the tension in this game.
But then, the Eagles expanded their margin back to double figures with 3-point bombs from Watkins and Gabriel Garza.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
