TPW Commission takes action on permit
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopted a new interim rule governing deer management permit activities at its public hearing on Jan. 21 in Austin.
The rule is part of the state’s response to the detection of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in captive deer populations.
Modifications are needed for consistency in movement standards – which were developed by both the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Animal Health Commission.
These new standards will help increase the probability of detecting CWD if a deer infected with the disease is released from the deer management permit facility.
The new guidelines establish classifications for deer management facilities, and impose testing requirements at release sites where deer have been trapped – or breeder deer from facilities that have been released. Read more in the Jan. 27 Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
