HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING: Towery, Davis vie for title
The most competitive match-up during the Bridgeport Invitational on Saturday took place in the girls’ 165-pound weight class.
Nocona’s Lexi Towery and Carrington Davis from Bowie ended up lifting the same amount of weight – 690 pounds, but the gold went to Towery since her body weight was lower by 6.4 pounds.
Both Towery and Davis recorded 275-pound squats. Davis actually had the edge in the bench press by 10 pounds, 135-125. But, Towery responded with a 290-pound dead lift, while Davis hoisted 280.
Towery helped Nocona earn 11 points at the meet, which was good enough for eighth spot.
Carcyn Robertson’s first-place finish at 132 pounds fueled Bowie to second place overall with 26 points, 11 behind Whitesboro.
Robertson lifted 660 pounds, including a 275-pound dead lift. Madison Metzler earned silver in the same weight class.
Bowie doubled up for success in the 123-pound division as well, and that’s despite state qualifier Kylie Robinson given the weekend off. Sami Deford was third and Sofie Butler took fourth, with Deford putting up 560 pounds for the bronze. Read more in the Jan. 27 edition of The Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
