Just two months away from sending out preliminary property values, appraisal districts are preparing their entities for a large decline in its mineral values for the 2016 tax year.

Appraisal district staffers from across the area met on March 8 in Wichita Falls for a program at the Texas Association of Appraisal Districts North Central Texas Chapter.

Kim Haralson, chief appraiser for the Montague County Tax Appraisal District, said the news for mineral values looks bad as projections indicate if everything stays the same from last year to this year, entities will be losing 50 percent of the mineral value on the good properties.

Haralson said she has forwarded to the MCTAD board of directors and jurisdictions information gleaned from this program along with new wording from the Texas Property Tax Code which took effect in January to prepare them for what is coming.
