The Gold-Burg High School volleyball team took a small step toward respectability last season – winning five matches, including two in District 2A-10.
Second-year head coach Cheryl Cromleigh is enthusiastic the Lady Bears can do even better in 2016.
“I am extremely positive, and upbeat,” Cromleigh said. “The kids have been together all summer, it’s been very productive.”
The Lady Bears fielded two teams in the TGIF Tournament, which took place here in Bowie most every Friday in the spring.
Before the regular season begins, Gold-Burg will be having a four-team scrimmage on Aug. 5 at Stoneburg. The Lady Bears will play Alvord, and Perrin-Whitt and Saint Jo will square off.
Gold-Burg doesn’t yet have a match scheduled for Aug. 9, the opening date of the season. So that means the Lady Bears’ tentative opener will be at the Harrold Tournament on Aug. 13.
“We played well, and made the championship last year (at Harrold),” Cromleigh said. “We’d like to win it this year.” Read more in the July 23 Bowie News.

Savannah Hil, one of the five, got Saint Jo rolling offensively with a four-point serving string, including a pair of aces. Abby Carter’s kill and Kamron Skidmore’s block helped put the Lady Panthers up 5-2 in game one.
Hadleigh Moore added a four-point string of her own to extend the lead to 10-3. Tatum Morman’s pair, helped by a Hill kill, gave Saint Jo a 14-5 lead. Bryson got within five before a Hill 3-pointer, with help by a Carter kill, put the lead back at 18-10.
After an Olivia Johnson kill broke serve, Jordyn O’Neal served up the final five points, with Johnson providing a kill to move things along.
