Bowie City Councilors gave first reading approval for the 2016-17 budget and had the final of two tax rate hearings.

There were no public comments in the tax hearing as the proposed tax rate of .51270 cents per $100 in property value was presented. This is slightly higher than the 2015 rate of .4945.

After months of whittling down the budget, the council adopted a general fund budget of $8,322,947 and a utility fund budget of $9,377,815.

The second reading of the budget ordinance and the first reading of the tax rate adoption are scheduled for the Sept. 20 meeting.

In other financial action, staff from Progressive Waste Management presented a request for a garbage collection rate increase based on the consumer price index.

The two-term DA Hall was indicted by the Montague County Grand Jury July 15 on a charge of theft of property $2,500 to $30,000, a state jail felony. The allegations stem from reported misappropriation of state grant funds.
