Bowie’s city charter to get review by commission
The 34-year-old City of Bowie home rule charter may soon receive updates as the city council Tuesday night approved the formation of a charter/ordinance review commission.
Bowie’s home rule charter was adopted through an election on April 7, 1984 and was declared by ordinance to be in effect on May 15, 1984.
Home rule cities are those which have adopted a charter for their local self-governance allowing them to choose their own form of municipal government.
Choosing between a large or small city council, fix terms of council members, pick a method of election of the mayor, create boards and commission to assist with city functions. In Texas a city with more than 5,000 people can choose to become a home rule city.
Mayor Gaylynn Burris asked to form a seven-person committee to review the charter and ordinances.
The council also voted to take steps to move forward with repairs to the Mill Street drainage culverts, which have collapsed forcing the closing of the street since February.
