Lady Rabbits win big at Holliday
The Bowie Lady Rabbits were able to keep their district title hopes alive by winning a key road victory at Holliday on Friday.
A strong first quarter from the Lady Rabbits was key as they won 43-35 against the Lady Eagles.
That first quarter saw Bowie’s press bother Holliday and create opportunities to score in transition and make several three-pointers. The normally slow paced and defense focused Lady Rabbits went up 19-10 in the first quarter, a total they have sometimes struggled to reach in two quarters of play.
The energy on both sides dialed it back a bit as Bowie controlled the tempo to a crawl in the second and third quarters. They led 26-18, but in a low scoring game the middle two quarters were, it felt like a huge obstacle for Holliday to overcome.
The Lady Rabbits led 32-23 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams ramped it up a bit as the Lady Eagles made some three-pointers, something Bowie had done a better job at defending compared to the first matchup.
The Lady Rabbits were able to answer those with three-pointers of their own to keep the lead at a comfortable margin that never threatened their confidence about winning the game.
Down the stretch, Bowie did itself some favors as Aslyn Davis went seven of eight from the free throw line in the game to keep the lead comfortable. Ultimately, it proved enough as the Lady Rabbits won 43-35.

Kally Jump will be taking over as head volleyball coach at Bowe High School.
Jump comes to town after a three-year stint as head coach at Class 4A Alvarado. She will be entering her 7th year of coaching this Fall. She replaces Ashley Sanders, who guide the team to a 6-6 finish in District 7-3A and a bi-district loss to Peaster.
After graduating from Tarleton State in 2020, she went to Itasca before going to Alvarado. With a number of family and friends in the area, Jump and her family decided to make the trip North.
Jump, who taught geometry and Algebra 2 at Alvarado, is the daughter of educators, She decided she wanted to be an educator when she was in elementary school.

A solid day was had by Montague county high school tracksters at the State Track and Field Meet May 16 in Austin.
Bellevue’s Mattie Broussard had a pair of second place finishes in both the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.41 and the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:31.33. Broussard also was 4th in the 1,600-meters with a time of 5:22.18.
Her teammate Brylie Hager was 9th in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.93.
Forestburg’s Brenna Briles was 4th in the triple jump with a 35’9 1’2” leap. Her teammate Jocelyn Rich was 4th in the pole vault with a 9’ leap.

Bowie had a pair of top four finishes at the State Track and Field Meet May 14.
Sophomore Brayden Willett made it onto the medal stand, finishing 3rd in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:17.89. Bowie junior Tyler Richey finished 4th in the pole vault after a 14’6” effort.
The top two finishers from Holliday, also in Bowie’s district, celebrated with him after he crossed the finish line.
“It was kind of surprising,” Willett said about Ryder and Noah Stroman embracing him in a celebratory hug. “They’re good guys, so it was kind of cool.”
