Bowie band earns all ‘1s,’ advances to area UIL
Bowie High School’s Mighty Marching Maroon will advance out of regional to area B contest after receiving straight ones at Saturday’s University Interscholastic League contest in Denton.
The band performed its Egyptian-themed show “Reign” by Russell Standridge. Director German Torres said the band had a wonderful performance.
“They did outstanding. We (students and directors) all felt it was their best performance this year. I am looking forward to seeing how much better we can get in the next five days,” said Torres.
The band will have a send-off at 8:40 a.m. Saturday with a police escort and they will march at 11:45 a.m. The public is welcome to attend for a $5 admission fee.
Torres is assisted by Robert Frick and Melissa Zamzow, assistant director, and Shawna Torres. The director also sent out his appreciation to the teachers and parents for supporting these band students.
The Pride of the Tribe marching band of Nocona High School also competed at a regional contest Saturday in Wichita Falls. Director Erin Hanson said the band received a pair of second divisions and one first division so they do not advance.
“It was a tough judging panel and although the results were not what we expected, the band represented Nocona very well and performed their best show of the season,” said the director, who also sent out thanks to band supporters.

UIL record archives only date back to 1983 and they didn’t see anyone listed as winning a gold medal in Academic UIL. According to Nocona records, she is the first UIL Academic Champion since 1973. “It definitely has been an amazing experience thus far, and meeting all of the super inspirational figures in flesh and blood was definitely surreal,” Evans said.
