What began as a regular outside audit report for Montague County on Monday segued into vague innuendos of possible fraud.
Mike Edgin of Edgin, Fleming and Fleming was questioned by Commissioner Mike Mayfield on what they do when presented with any allegation of fraud within county operations. Edgin briefly went through the 2024-25 audit highlights noting the county’s strong financial position before the question came up.
As he closed out, Mayfield told Edgin each year as a county official he gets a letter asking if there are any concerns about fraud issues. Mayfield said he never fills it out, to which Edgin responded, “That is your prerogative.”
He asked Edgin if he received any report of fraud last year and what he did with it. Edgin said he started by talking with County Judge Kevin Benton to see if he had information on it.
“He told me what was going on and I felt like it was being addressed by outside sources,” said the auditor.
