Green Beret Adventure cycling team stops in Bowie enroute to Florida

Published

on

The Ride to Valhalla rolled into Bowie on Sept. 11 continuing its cross-country bike ride to raise money to assist American veterans.

The ride is the idea of Zach Garner and Adam Smith. The 30-year-old Garner hails from Minneapolis, IN and he spent 10 and a half years in the military serving as a Green Beret.

Garner was diagnosed with epilepsy, and coupled with some previous traumatic brain injuries, he was forced to leave the service for health reason.

Smith, 32, is from Jeffersonville, IN and he also is a Green Beret soldier serving almost 16 years.

The Green Beret Adventure Team was created after Smith’s tough transition into civilian life after being medically discharged. Smith says Task Force Dagger helped him make that transition, and he wanted to find a way to give back.

“My hobby has been cycling, so we thought we could work together to create awareness and raise money,” said Smith as the team stopped off at the Bowie Fire Department Friday. Read the full story in the mid-week News.

July Jam planned for July 27

Published

on

The 22nd annual July Jam returns on July 27 to the Bowie Community Center West Hall, 413 Pelham Street in Bowie.
There will be a “chickin’ pickin’ fiddling fun time” as guests will be entertained by amazing fiddling tunes and enjoying a chicken meal with delicious homemade jams because it wouldn’t be July Jam without it.
Tickets are just $15 with the event starting at 6 p.m. The funds raised help provide awards for the Championship Fiddler Competition during Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival on Oct. 5.
This attracts talented musicians from all over to visit downtown Bowie to test their fiddling skills on stage in the Bowie Fire Hall on Oct. 5.
Along with the live fiddling entertainment, come hungry and be ready to outbid your neighbors at the silent auction or just stop by for a great meal, fellowship and soak in the air conditioning.
