Rodeo and the livestock industry have gone hand in hand for rural Nocona native Jessica Locke throughout her life.
Locke is the youngest of four children of Johnny and Cheryl Locke, a family that raises bucking bulls for premium national rodeo competitions. The ranch is located between Nocona and Prairie Valley on FM 103.
This past week, Locke represented the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo as its queen for the Miss Rodeo Oklahoma competition.
“I did really well,” Locke said. “I won Miss Congeniality and I won the Betty Baker Scholarship.”
Locke won the scholarship based on the number of points she accumulated during the interview.
This has been an incredible summer for Locke, serving as the Pioneer Days Rodeo queen. To the folks in Guymon, Pioneer Days is their version of the Super Bowl.
“I’ve been going to schools and talking to kids,” Locke said. “I make a presentation. I talk to them about the rodeo. I sign autographs. And all the little girls want to give me a hug.”
Interestingly enough, Sage Kimzey had the winning ride at the Pioneer Days Rodeo on a bull the Lockes raised.
Kimzey, a sophomore at Southwestern Oklahoma State, rode a bull named Lineman for a 92 score at the world-famous Hitch Arena in Guymon. Read more in the weekend edition of The Bowie News.
