Four Montague County teams competed in the final day of the Chico Tournament on Saturday.
Forestburg
The Lady Horns powered through pool play, defeating Saint Jo, Gold-Burg and Chico to win Pool B.
“We had to work for every point in pool play,” said Forestburg head coach Rosana Barbosa. “But we played well Thursday.”
Forestburg returned Saturday for the championship bracket. The Lady Horns started the day with a big win against Valley View in three sets 25-18, 22-25, 28-26.
“It was a very competitive game,” Barbosa said. “I told the team to fight for every point. They never gave up.”
The Horns played district foe Collinsville in the next game. They were unable to prevail as the Lady Pirates won 25-20, 25-18.
“Collinsville played us well,” the coach said. “Our mistakes cost us in the end.”
The Lady Horns were sent down to the consolation bracket as a result, squaring off against county rival Saint Jo.
The first set was a slow start for the Horns, but they were able to get the better of the Lady Panthers, defeating them in three sets 18-25, 25-12, 25-14.
The next opponent was the host Chico. The Dragons defeated the Lady Horns in a competitive five sets last week in Forestburg, so the team knew they would be in for a challenge. However, the Lady Horns were up to the task, defeating Chico in three sets 25-23, 27-25, 25-22.
“I feel like both sides made a few mistakes,” Barbosa said.
In their final game of the day, the Lady Horns challenged Poolville for fourth place. Forestburg would finish fifth in the tournament, falling 25-22, 17-25, 19-25. Read the rest of this story in The Bowie News.
