FOOTBALL: Nocona struggles in opener

Nocona opened the 2014 season in Alvord against a former district opponent.
And the Bulldogs would get the better of their familiar foe with a 38-8 victory.
“I don’t think they played very well,” said head coach Brad Keck. “We looked like a deer in headlights.”
Those headlights may have been courtesy of Alvord’s star running back, Joe Randall.
Randall rushed for 176 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, and he reached the 3,000-yard career rushing mark.
Despite that, most of Alvord’s scores came from the air.
“Randall was a must to stop,” said Keck. “But you have to try to defend against the other 10 guys out there too.”
Nocona’s only touchdown was courtesy of a blocked punt by Matt Womack, followed by Cristian Ibarra completing the two-point conversion.
“Well, that says a lot of good things about special teams, but the offense will have to start scoring as well,” said the coach.
Turnovers were another issue for the Indians. Of the six fumbles, Alvord was able to recover four. The Bulldogs also recorded an interception.
Keck noted the team is still very young.
“For a lot of those kids, that was their first varsity game. We only have one kid playing both ways,” he said. “So we essentially have 21 new positions.” Read the Bowie News for the rest of the story, including game statistics.

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
